Yellow Pages… Are They Dead?

Does anyone use the Yellow Pages anymore to find information? What do you think?

My 18-year-old daughter opened the front door yesterday and found the yearly delivery for our yellow page book sitting on the front porch. She asked me… “Dad, what’s this?” I replied, the yellow pages, and she wondered what it was for. I told her all the local businesses in our area are listed in the book with their phone number and address. She looked at me with confusion and amusement. Her reply… “why?”

I told her that’s what we did back in the day to find information about a new business. We looked in the big yellow book. She said, “why wouldn’t you just Google it, Dad?”

I forewent the long explanation that we didn’t have PC’s, Laptops, Tablets, Mobile phones, or Google back in the ‘80s. But she makes a very good point illustrated by the picture below.

Some Stats on Phone Book VS Google Local Search Marketing Stats

  • In 2017, ComScore found that more than half of the U.S. has replaced the phone book with an online search, and that number is growing as mobile usage skyrockets.
  • According to MSN, 70% of Americans don’t even open their phone books. Only 11% use Whitepages.
  • According to Brightlocal’s yearly survey, 97% of consumers have used the internet to find local businesses in the last year.
  • Display ads in phone books, on average, have a conversion rate of less than 1%.

So, what are people using to find information on local businesses like yours in your area?

We have seen searches on Google for local businesses increase over 4x during the start of the pandemic. This is a huge trend considering even before the Pandemic, Google searches averaged 3.5 billion searches a day. That’s billion with a “B.”
